Brief Explanation:
One of the three usage scenarios for 5G is massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). Many IoT devices such as smart water meters and smart sensors generate very little amounts of data and are delay-tolerant. 5G aims to support a million connected or accessible low-rate IoT devices in a square kilometer area. Note that we are not talking about a million smartphones that may have high rate and/or low latency services. As a reference, IMT-Advanced for 4G aimed for 100k devices per square kilometer.
